Scottish Open championships - (6th - 7th Oct)

Luton Sports Club of the Year, JKL (Shotokan) were once again in action at the Scottish Open Karate Championship held in Glasgow during the first week of October.

The Hightown based dojo sent a 16 strong team including 6 members of the squad who recently represented Great Britain at the World Cup in Japan.

After a few broken noses, cuts and bruises the team secured a fantastic total of 14 medals made up of 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 7 Bronzes.

A large and enthusiastic following of Team Luton supporters cheered on the squad with the outstanding performance of the day going to 13 year old Amy Parkins, who took both Gold medals in her division. Alex Peirson making his debut on the national scene managed to secure a Gold medal win in Kata and hearty congratulations must also go to the youngest of the JKL Gold medal winners Jamie Pepper who took his medal in the 9/10 year mixed Kumite.

Other brilliant performances were by Liam Mills who took double Bronze medals in his division, Ryan Slack who gained a Bronze medal in Kata behind his team mate Alex, Eammon Devane who secured a Bronze in Kata in the senior boys grouping and after a battering Channing Smart won a Bronze medal in kumite competing for the first time in the senior ladies competition.

Chief Instructor of the dojo, Sensei Sabrina Collins had this to say about the overall performance of her team, “Its great to see the team knitting, becoming stronger and confidence together, well done to all I'm proud of everyone's performances and thanks also to the supporters.”

In mid October having been selected for a Great Britain squad, Sensei Sabrina Collins and senior student Mark Slattery will travel to Lubeck, Germany to train with Abe Sensei 8th and compete in the JSKA friendly team tournament Germany versus England.

UPDATE – 04/04/07

It has been really great to have so many of you asking about updates and apologies about no news since the 30th. We can only ‘blame’ the time difference coupled with the fact that our team in Japan have been travelling for a few days and it has been difficult for them to be in contact. They are now travelling back to the UK and we expect them some time on the 5th. Sure they will update us all in person.

The trip sounds exhausting so I guess they will need a holiday!

Oh and some great news – both Jacob and Charlie are now Shodan’s.

30/03/07 - Update from Darren Pepper

Hello to every one back home - the time now here in Tokyo is 5 minutes to one in the morning, and we have had a truly amazing day. though training had it start time changed from 1130 to 1330 and we where told about this at 0030 on the Friday morning that is the day of the training so as you can see plenty of notice.........we caught 3 trains and walked half a mile to get to the training, so that was nice, the weather was great for the hike as we had all our survival kit with us. The training had to be cut short as they where running late (don’t we know it) the training finished at approx 415 when Charlie and Jacob where advised that they would now have to take there black belt grading in the next 20 minutes or will have to wait till September to be able to take them again...........oh by the way they never had the pleasure of 3 Sensei to grade in front of they had top 14 of the world Sensei to impress yet alone the rest of the world to watch.... so they were a little nervous/ emotional to say the least. Gradings started at 1630 and finished at 2130 and our boys where up first and had to sit there the whole time with out even chancing going to the toilet. We got back to our hotels about 2245 with no dinner at all - we tried several kfc mcd and all sorts of strange places to eat - some of us ate at noodle bars back at our base the rest of us ordered pizza and chips back at hotel and got pizza and crisps, but we where just happy to be almost done. Alan Trish Andy Kevin are all sewing the KWF world cup numbers on the back of the gi’s for tomorrow, I’m doing this email with 1 eye open hot toddie in the other hand feet in a bowl of water thinking I got to meet Andy at 7 in hotel lobby so we can go on the train to Shinigawa to get some food for the guys tomorrow - then train back here to meet every one for an 8 o’clock depart to be at the bumb( dojo) for 0900 to hopefully kick some butttttttt. Every one bar Darren will be competing tomorrow so fingers crossed for them all. Darren will be competing on Sunday.......... so its good night from me and its good night from Japan...... oh I forgot to mention we all had some " special hip training today" it was that very nice Feeling!!!!!

Ps: if you have read this properly you should still be wondering one thing?????? They will know tomorrow morning whether or not they passed there grading....ta ta for now.

UPDATE - 30/03/07

Technology is fantastic (when it works!) – the ‘gang’ are already aware of the magnificent result last night – Coach of the Year for Sensei Daniels and Club of the Year for JKAL – and have viewed some pictures of the event. Perhaps we should have set up a MSN Web Cam for the ceremony – would only have been about 3 in the morning for them! Apparently they are going to celebrate for us ALL tonight. They were absolutely delighted with the news and we are sure it will put them in good spirits. They are getting into competition mode so the updates are a bit ‘thin’.

UPDATE - 29/03/07

We have received good luck messages from all our JKAL squad in Japan for tonight’s Sports Awards ceremony. They are all in good spirits but the 28 hours travelling time are catching up on them.

UPDATE - 27/03/07

Just to let you know that everyone arrived safely – they all must be very tired as they could not have had much time for sleep yet.

Today they visited the Temple of the Forty-Seven Ronin. The story of the Forty-Seven Ronin is quite amazing and is one of the few stories that over the years has not and does not need to be embellished – they have promised to give us an account when they return.

UPDATE - 26/03/07

Well they’re finally off – their plane left Heathrow this morning and when we spoke with them they had just ordered a healthy fried breakfast! A small problem with security when they asked for clothing to be removed – Mark was said to be quite upset when he was informed it was just shoes and socks!!

The flight time is about 15 hours so they will arrive nearer midnight tonight our time – that’s about 0900hrs tomorrow morning Japan time – so they are going to have to work real hard to not be jet lagged.

Even from the airport they all wanted to say a big Thank You to everyone for the ‘send-off’ last Saturday. They really appreciated all the best wishes and good luck messages – and the food! They hope you also enjoyed.

Whilst we are on the subject – it really was fantastic to see the level of support and the Parents Committee would again like to again thank everyone for their support in getting the Squad to Japan. Your efforts really are appreciated.

EGGS AND BREAD ON THE TOP!

Students from the Luton based JKAL karate dojo were out in force over the festive period,
fundraising for the seven members of their club who have been selected for the British Team
to compete in the forthcoming World Cup Tournament taking place in Japan.

Over thirty kids helped shoppers with packing their shopping at two local supermarkets,
namely Asda in Wigmore and Sainsbury’s in Bury Park. As a result of their efforts over four days, the children managed to collect £1200 for their team mates to help with the cost of travelling to Tokyo in March.

Chief Instructor, Sabrina Collins said “I would like to thank all the shoppers for their generosity, and especially Asda and Sainsbury’s for allowing us to fundraise in their stores.
People seemed very interested in the students and many passed on best wishes for the young competitors who will be facing opponents from all over the world.”

The students have been busy fundraising for the past four months by car washing, book and video sales, car boot sales and a Christmas disco, and will soon be contacting the local business community for further sponsorship.

If you would like to help, then please contact the club via email at jkalutoncommittee@hotmail.co.uk

Training sessions are held at Ashcroft High School on Saturdays (1000-1130) and Hightown Community Sports Centre (York Street) on Tuesdays (6-7 pm).
