Legend Open Karate Championships - Bracknell, March 2009
JKL members travelled to Bracknell in Berkshire this weekend to compete against an international field in the Legend Open Karate Championships.
A squad of 14 competitors lined up to take on teams from around the globe and managed to win a total of nine trophies.

In the kata section the event organisers controversially merged several different categories together and after a marathon four-hour event, Liam Mills came out on top to win first place in the 12-15 mixed category after successfully scoring the highest marks in each round.
Ryan Parkins continued to add to the trophy haul by taking the second place in his 10-11 kata division, as did Mark Slattery who took third place in the 16-20 male category.
In the kumite free-fighting section, the JKL team won even more trophies with Liam Mills, Ryan Parkins and Ajay Ghela bagging second places in their respective divisions. Jacob Croke and Mark Slattery took joint third place in their 16-20 male category and Tony Atkinson also picked up third place in the veterans category.
Chief Instructor, Sensei Sabrina Daniels said “The club has recently invested in some new training equipment with help from Young Fundz and Active Luton and we can already see the improvement in the standard of our competitors and students”.
The Hightown based club will be hoping to repeat the weekends’ success when a JKL squad flies out to Norway at the end of March as part of the GB Team who will be competing in the 5th KWF World Cup Championships in Kristiansund.
The club still maintains its founding aim of providing a low cost activity for young people (age 6+), and anyone interested in trying karate is very welcome to attend the novice class on Saturday mornings (10-11am) at the Hightown Community Sports and Arts Centre in Concorde Street, Luton.
