JKL Shobu-Ippon success

8th May 2010

A squad of JKL fighters were once again in action last weekend at the Shobu-Ippon International Shotokan Open held in Guildford. This ever popular competition attracted in excess of 750 competitors this year from numerous countries.
Liam Mills, competing in the 67 strong 15-17 year old division, put on an impressive display to win first place in the kata event and second place in the kumite event. In addition with Charlie Pepper and Lauren Sheridan, the three teenagers also came fourth in the team kata event whilst fellow student, Lisa Taylor, picked up another trophy for the club by taking first place in her kumite event.

JKL Technical Director, Sensei Fred Daniels, said “It’s so pleasing to see students grow and mature over the years and achieve such results in a large competition like Shobu-Ippon.”

KWF- ENGLAND National KWF Competition
25th April 2010

Local karate club, JKL, hosted a KWF National competition and training seminar at its’ Hightown base last weekend with competitors travelling from London, Wales and Scotland.

The weekend’s events commenced on Saturday with seminars given by Sensei Jim Lewis (7th Dan KWF) and Sensei Sid Tadrist  (6th Dan KWF) throughout the day.
Then Sunday saw the clubs youngsters, many of them competing at a national level for the first time, hold their nerve and shine out above the rest of the field.
The clubs more experienced Dan grades also performed very well, with Liam Mills being named Overall Junior Champion after winning three first places in his individual and team divisions.

This is the first time that the Club has hosted a National competition on home soil, and supported by an army of volunteers the event went off without any hitches. In fact the weekend was so well organised that the club could be asked to organise an international competition in the future.
